Pruning Tree Crowns at Time of Planting
It’s the time of year to plant bare root trees. Are you still pruning the tree’s crown when you plant it to compensate for root loss? It might seem logical to balance the crown to root ratio, but no research exists to show this practice ever had beneficial results!
Research over the last 20 years shows exactly the opposite, that compensatory tree crown pruning DOES NOT BENEFIT NEWLY TRANSPLANTED TREES. Read more about it in this publication:
