    Equipping traditional and new land and property owners from diverse backgrounds to make informed decisions regarding forest land management. Building capacity among urban communities and partners through innovative programming. Includes local administration of rural forestry programs, local leadership pertaining to natural resource issues, community and urban forestry, and direct landowner assistance.

    Delivery of Agency public affairs programs, including: conservation education activities for youth and adult learners and participation in local economic development organizations. Under the direction of the District Forester or Regional Forester, supervision of staff and management of local agency service programs. Includes oversight of employee activities, facilities, training, grounds, equipment, reporting, etc. Support of local county forest landowners association(s), Texas Master Gardener and Texas Master Naturalist programs and a variety of for profit and non-profit organizations. Includes attending board and membership meetings, assisting with meeting programs, and development of association newsletter. Administration and support of local protection and emergency response programs in rural and urban interface urban and rural forest pest mitigation, wildland fire suppression, capacity building, etc. Be able to work weekends and afterhours to reach audience.

    May include long hours in a harsh environmental conditions such as smoke, wind, rain, and extreme temperatures. Persons serving in emergency response must meet a physical fitness standard which includes successfully completing a 2-mile walk in 30 minutes or less with a 25 pound pack and obtain required NWCG training and Red Card Certification as determined by TFS Red Card Committee. Emergency response may result in exposure to emotionally stressful situations for extended periods of time. Must carry cell phone to facilitate 24/7 communications. Must live within 30 minutes of workstation to facilitate rapid after-hours fire response. Employee must manage/account for assigned credit cards in accordance with state law and agency policies.

    This Forester position is considered a training position with a training/mentoring period of up to 2 or more years. Once the training period is complete the employee will be expected to start assuming the duties of District Forester I in the Conroe District.

    Occasional Duties Work is often outdoors and in a harsh environment such as smoke, rough terrain, dusty roads, etc. Must meet a physical fitness standard which includes successfully completing a two-mile walk in 30 minutes or less with 25 pounds and obtain required NWCG training and Red Card Certification as determined by TFS Red Card Committee.     Support District Forester with delivery of all Resource Development and Resource Protection programs. Tasks may include preparation of tract/stand maps, collecting property and stand data, direct interaction with clientele, drafting of management plans, capacity building, conservation education, fire prevention, and special projects. Serve as a wildland firefighter and/or emergency responder on a statewide basis. Duties will include operations of heavy firefighting equipment, use of hand firefighting tools, and perform ground reconnaissance on wildfires. Employee must meet and maintain a physical fitness standard which includes successfully completing a 2-mile walk in 30 minutes or less while carrying a 25lb pack and obtain required NWCF training Red Card Certification. Employee will carry a communication device to facilitate 24/7 availability. Will be required to respond to dispatcher within 30 minutes receiving an emergency notification alert.

    Employee must live within 30 minutes of assigned work station to facilitate timely emergency response.

    Required Education: High School Graduate or equivalent.

    Required Experience: Have or obtain a Texas Class B within 6 months and/or a Class A within 2 years of employment and have a driving record within the agency requirements.. Good communication skills and basic computer skills are required. Experience as a Forest Technician with a sate or federal forestry agency or forest industry and a thorough knowledge of heavy equipment is preferred.

    Urban Forest Specialist – Temp/Hourly


    The Urban Forest Specialist will assist the Austin ISD Arborist with the District’s Urban Tree Inventory using Arbor Pro GIS software. This process involves visiting Austin ISD schools and facilities, accurately identifying the tree species on site, mapping their location, photographing them, and indicating the health status and maintenance needs of each tree. This inventory will: 1. identify tree care needs, 2. prioritize hazard tree risk mitigation, 3. assist in planning for schoolyard and construction projects, 4. identify tree-deficient schools for future plantings, 5. enable the District to strategically plan for long-term urban forest tree care and hazard prevention. This inventory will also be shared with the City of Austin. In addition to conducting the tree inventory, the specialist will assist in the following tasks: 1. conduct tree care site assessments before and after tree care work is performed by the contracted service provider, 2. coordinate and attend tree plantings and landscape related events at schools, and 3. assist in outreach with relevant stakeholders at the school and community levels, and 4. Perform occasional minor pruning at ground level. The position is funded through the City of Austin Urban Forest Grant and is part-time for one year (approximately 19.50 hours/week, may vary depending on nature of activities from week to week).

    Work Planner


    Wright Tree Service is currently seeking a Work Planner to start in the Austin, TX area on a full-time basis. Wright Tree Service provides vegetation management, storm restoration, and work planning services to utility companies and their communities across the country.

    Essential Functions:

    ◦Obtains oral or written permission/notification from property owner, municipal, business to trim, remove or apply herbicide to trees. Secures appropriate permits when necessary. Arranges with customer or property owner to obtain access and advises of any interruption if applicable. Explains work to be done and sets timelines.

    ◦Responsible for the maintenance and accuracy of all records and reports related to permission/notification from customer/home owner to General Foreman and crew personnel.

    ◦Plans and lays out work for crew members. Considers factors such as the ability to get power equipment to locations, time required to complete work, clean-up time, equipment available, weather conditions and special instructions by customers/homeowners.

    ◦Has an understanding and follow all applicable work methods pertaining to line clearance work.

    ◦Inspects right of ways to assess vegetation conditions and determine required maintenance.

    ◦Responds to questions and concerns regarding work specifications and requirements.

    ◦Inspects work completed by crew/contractors for compliance and utility specifications.

    Minimum Requirements:

    ◦Must be able to achieve ISA Certified Arborist & ISA Utility Specialist within 1 year of employment.

    ◦Texas Dept of Agriculture Commercial Pesticide Applicatory License (Category 5) preferred or ability to obtain within 6 months.

    ◦Must be able to read, write, and speak English.

    ◦Possess excellent leadership skills and be able to handle stressful situations along with being able to multi-task.

    ◦Basic knowledge of trees, including identification, growth habits and correct arboricultural techniques for the trimming, pruning, repairing, maintaining and removing, as applies to working in close proximity to energized conductors.

    ◦Must be able to wear necessary personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.
